The Mad Honey is a type of honey native to Nepal which comes from the nectar of the Rhododendron flowers (Ericaceae family) which is specific to Himalayan, Nepal’s mountains.
It is produced through the pollination of the rhododendron flower. This pollen contains an active ingredient called grayanotoxin, which is infused in the honey and gives it its unique and rare properties.
Our Mad Honey is exclusively harvested in the mountains of the Lamjung region, Nepal.
We are currently offering the Harvest 2023.
Unlike other brands on the market, our Mad Honey is unique and collected from an exclusive site only once a year, around late May to early June at the peak of the blooming of the Rhododendron and depending on the rain season.
Then we need some time to get back from the mountains to the village, run all the tests, get the certifications, bottle up and supply our fulfillment centers.
Every year, our mad honey is available as from mid June to early July and there's a perfect reason for that: offering the very best and most potent mad honey possible!
The Mad Honey is harvested from the high cliffs where the bees build their combs. It is hunted exclusively by the Gurung tribesmen through ancient tradition and the harvest process itself is very dangerous and must be carried out only by those who have received training from their elders.

The Gurung Tribesmen have used Mad Honey for centuries for its antiseptic and antibacterial active properties and also for recreational use which set it apart from traditional honey.
The medicinal properties: It is renown to be a powerful antioxidant, natural antibiotic, rich in minerals and vitamins, which boosts the immune system, improves blood circulation, metabolism and enhances sexual performance!
We recommend 1 teaspoon every morning for optimum benefits.
The psycho-active effects: Each body reacts differently to the grayanotoxin and the effects can also vary due to the body weight and lifestyle.
We highly recommend to start with 1 teaspoon to see how the body reacts and increase to not more than 3 tablespoons per intake.
The effects will occur within 20 min to 1 hour and last usually 3 to 5 hours.
Experienced effects are feelings such as body relaxation, brain awareness and change of the state of consciousness, surge of energy, euphoria and alteration in colors and brightness. More sensitive and reactive bodies can also experience nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, sweating and increased blood pressure.
Please refer to our disclaimer and safety instruction before any usage.
The Mad Honey is made from the pollen of Rhododendron flowers.
The rhododendron nectar contains high levels of diterpines and the most important (by amount) diterpine in the rhododendron nectar is grayanotoxin which is known to exert interesting psychoactive effects.
Our Mad Honey Limited Reserve contains high level of grayanotoxin that are not found in any other honey!
Each harvest is tested and certified.
Our Mad Honey is certified Himalayan Wild Honey from Ministry of Agriculture Government of Nepal and tested by National Food Laboratory (accredited ISO 17025:2017).
We also have European Certification and our Honey is tested in Europe for its purity (no diluent, no additive), origin and quality.
These certified lab tests include:
- Electrical conductivity (eC) = 1,77
- Diastase number (Phadebas Amylase Test) = 9.5
- Ph = 4,84
- Pollen analysis = Rhododendron 87%
The research are carried out in accordance with the guidelines contained in the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of 14 January 2009 on the methods of analysis related to the evaluation of honey (Journal of Laws of 2009, N0. 17, item 94).

NOTE. There is currently no official laboratory with accredited method that exists on the market to test and determine the level of grayanotoxin. Please be careful of misleading marketing from other sellers and brand who publish senseless reports with hidden date!
As the first company to trade Himalayan Mad Honey worldwide, we are an active and respected member of the Mad Honey Community in Nepal. We are not just sellers of Mad Honey. We support and work together with the tribes and local communities.
We started The Mad Honey with several missions; fair trade and sustainability. We deal with the Gurungs themselves. In this way we can keep the highest quality and potency of The Mad Honey as high as possible.
The Gurungs have a long tradition of Mad Honey hunt. In close cooperation with the members of the tribes, we decided to join forces and develop a reliable scheme to preserve these traditions and also to protect the bee hives.
At the moment we have an agreement on a "smart collection" with the Gurungs to buy their Mad Honey at a fair price, according to fair trade guide lines and to pay them the full price of the harvest but at least 30% of the hives should remain on the cliffs for the bees (the bees feed themselves on this Honey during the winter season).
So yes, our Mad Honey is expensive but for good reasons:
- Our Mad Honey contains high levels of active ingredients that are not found in other honeys.
- We collect only the best quality in respect of the traditions
- We support the local communities by purchasing at a fair trade price
- We take care of the bees by paying for the preservation of their hives
Thank you for your understanding :)

Strong taste with mild sweetness followed by a bitter aftertaste.
Dark black to amber shades with gold hues.
Mad Honey has a specific pungent smell which is different from any other honey.
Due to its high concentration of fructose and the collection season (early Spring 2021 which was heavy rain season this year!) the mad honey Limited Reserve 2021 will remain very runny and as a thin liquid.
Our simple process ensures that every jar of The Mad Honey is all genuine, pure Wild Himalayan Honey and we don’t filter our honey to keep all the “good stuff” as the pollen, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and grayanotoxin.
Every bottle of The Mad Honey is genuine and a light fermentation with deposit and bubbles can occur and is a natural occurence of the product.
